• What happens in counselling session? You and your therapist explore what’s been troubling you, clarify your goals, and work together on strategies to help you feel better. Sessions can include talking, learning skills, self-reflection, and practical tools.
• What happens in the first session? Your initial session is a gentle orientation. We talk about what brings you in, your goals, your history, and what you’d like to change or understand. I’ll ask questions to get a fuller picture, explain how therapy works, and together we’ll create a direction for our work. We will also discuss confidentiality issues, office policies, etc. Many people leave the first session feeling clearer and more grounded.
• How do I know if counselling is right for me?If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, stressed, anxious, low, confused about relationships, or if something is happening in your life that you feel you cannot handle yourself, or just want to understand yourself better, counselling can help. You don’t need to be “in crisis” to benefit.
• What issues do counsellors help with?Common topics include stress, anxiety, depression, emotional issues/disregulation, relationship concerns, communication issues, grief and loss, trauma, work-related issues, life transitions, and self-confidence.
• What is your therapeutic approach? Most counsellors use an integrative approach. My main theoretical orientation is CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), but I combine techniques and interventions from other approaches and mindfulness to tailor treatment to each client’s unique needs.
• How long is a session? My sessions are typically 50 minutes. I also offer extended sessions on request.
• How many sessions will I need?It varies and depends on many factors. Some people notice changes after a few sessions, while others prefer longer-term support. We will collaborate with you on working out a treatment plan to address your needs.
• Is counselling confidential?Yes. Everything shared in session is confidential except in specific legal situations (risk of harm, child/vulnerable adult protection concerns, or court-ordered disclosure).
• Do you offer online sessions?Yes, I do provide secure video counselling for clients who prefer the flexibility of meeting from home.
• What if I don’t know what to talk about? That’s completely normal! I will meet you where you are and gently guide the session, ask helpful questions, and gently explore what’s present for you.
• What if we don’t “click”?A good therapeutic relationship is essential. If something feels off, it’s always okay to bring it up. After we discuss everything, we can adjust the approach or I will help you find someone who’s a better fit.
• Can counselling really help with stress?Yes. Counselling can teach practical coping strategies, help you understand your stress responses, and build long-term resilience.
• What’s the difference between a psychologist, counsellor, and therapist?Titles vary by training and province. Psychologists usually hold higher graduate degrees and are regulated professionals. Counsellors and therapists may have different credentials but offer similar services. What matters most is training, experience, and fit.
• Do you work with insurance?Yes! My services are covered by most extended health plans. Most health insurances cover counselling provided by Canadian Certified Counsellors (CCC) or Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCC), and psychologists (R.Psych). Check your provider for specifics, or ask me in session about insurance coverage.
• What if I’m nervous about starting?Totally understand - almost everyone feels that way! Beginning therapy is a brave step — you’re not expected to have everything figured out. That’s exactly why you’re coming.
• Can I bring up more than one issue?Absolutely. People are complex, and so are their lives. You can bring anything that’s affecting your well-being.
• What should I expect after a session? Some people feel lighter, some feel thoughtful, and some feel tired. All of it is normal — change takes energy.
• Do you give homework?Sometimes. Practices such as journaling, reflection questions, or small behavioural experiments can deepen your progress in between sessions and expand the work beyond sessions.
• Do you work with adults, couples, or teens?I work with adults and young adults.
• Is it normal to feel worse before you feel better?Occasionally, yes. It is actually pretty common - when you start unpacking things you’ve held for a long time, emotions can temporarily intensify. Your therapist will support you through the process.
• What if I cancel or miss a session? Most clinics have a cancellation policy (e.g., 24 or 48 hours). I aks you to reschedule or cancel your appointment 24 hours in advance. Otherwise, unfortunately, late cancellation fee will be applied. This helps protect the therapist’s time and allows other clients to book.
